Backstage passes are kind of ridiculous. But when there is free beer around it usually is a necessity. Recently I was backstage around the beer tub took note of the interactions between all of the bands.
Marketing eh-holes call this type of talking Networking. That word makes me go crazy. Like we said in the New Rockstar Philosophy book (download it) networking only means making friends.
Backstage friends are very important. Typically the more bands you know the more you’ll get gig opportunities. Friends from out of town are particularly important. Offer them a place to stay and more than likely they’ll return the favour when you’re in their home town.
